Oak Ridge Valley Farm Organics began in May 2002, when we purchased 22 acres of land in beautiful East Texas. Our passion for certified organic farming finally had its beginning. Being able to work in harmony with God's creation by applying principles of organic farming has been fulfilling and challenging. Our farm is located in Van Zandt County about 80 miles East of Dallas.
When we purchased the land we were able to get a certified declaration that no prohibitive substances had been applied to the land for the 10 years preceding our purchase. Prohibitive substances include chemical fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and growth regulators. We began farming a small 1/2 acre portion of the land just for our own use.
The following year we increased our farm to one acre, received our certified organic status, and began selling our certified organic produce at the inception of the Coppell Farmer's Market in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. We steadily grew over the next several years and are now farming just under 5 acres. In addition to the Coppell Farmer's Market we also participated in the Mckinney Farmer's Market the past 2 years.
For the 2012 growing season we will be continuing the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) started in 2010. In we decided to begin a CSA instead of continuing to participate in farmer's markets because of a significant decrease in available farm help. Participation in the Coppell Market requires at least 6-7 individuals each Saturday and we will not have that amount of help.
